PENETRATING WOUNDS AND TYPE OF INJURY

Synonyms stab, puncture, perforation.

These can be divided into three kinds.

1. Those caused by a flat, sharp object
For Example: a knife (Stab)
2. Those caused by a sharp thin object
For Example: needle (Puncture)
3. Those caused by an elongated blunt ended object
For Example: Fence (Perforation)

All shares are one common feature:
Penetration through the skin into the underlying
tissue and a depth is greater than length.

¨The type of any injury will depend on how it is caused and what has caused it bearing in mind that it must be produced either by impact by the tissue against same object or an object against the tissue.
